This book takes for itself an arduous challenge – arriving at a new moral philosophy to deal with modern challenges as huge as Climate Change, Immigration, Polarization etc.
The book does a fine job of the task and in the process becomes an easy explainer for so many philosophical and psychological topics.
The book is broadly divided into 3 parts – the book begins by explaining the moral machinery in our brains and how despite its many flaws helps us navigate the tragedy of commons i.e. handling situations of “me” vs. “us” and how inept it is when it comes to handling tragedy of the common-sense morality i.e. “us” vs. “them”. The first part deals with origins and neurological aspects of this phenomenon as well. Second part deals with why this existing moral machinery as well as the existing moral philosophies are not enough to deal with modern challenges leading to the third part where author is prescribing a new understanding of Utilitarianism as the solution.
The book may or may not convince you about its prescription but will broaden ones understanding and provide everyone with new perspective to look at the modern world. Perhaps it will also help one self be better prepared for philosophical debates among friends and families.
Overall a must-read book. Happy Reading.
